Hansen Avenue - Proposed ‘No Parking Anytime’ zone
Department of Engineering–Traffic Engineering Division
Approve the attached ordinance enacting a ‘No Parking Anytime’ zone along the western curb of Hansen Avenue between the northern curb of Porter Street and the southern curb of 40th Street.
Hansen Avenue is a one-block long public street with one-way traffic flow southbound. The street was constructed with raised concrete curbs on both sides and a pavement width of 23 feet between the curb faces. This pavement width is too narrow to accommodate one lane of traffic flow and parallel parking on both sides of the street. Vehicles are currently parking on both sides of the street, particularly during times when nearby churches are holding services/meetings. Traffic Engineering has received several recent complaints from residents living on Hansen Avenue about their inability to drive along this street while cars are parked on both sides. When Hansen Avenue was part of Bibb City, yellow paint was placed on the western curb face to deter parking on that side of the street. After Hansen Avenue was annexed into Columbus, no ordinance was ever enacted to enforce the previous ‘no parking’ restriction.
In January, 2015, the Traffic Engineering Division mailed a parking survey to the owners of all seven residential lots fronting on Hansen Avenue. Each owner was asked which side of the street they preferred to have a ‘no parking’ restriction. The two responders to the survey both said their preference was for the ‘no parking’ restriction to be placed along the western curb.
The installation of the ‘No Parking Anytime’ signs will cost the City approximately $350.00.
Projected Annual Fiscal Impact:
The only future fiscal impact to the City is the replacement of damaged signs and posts.
The enforcement of a ‘No Parking Anytime’ zone requires an ordinance adopted by Council.
Approve a ‘No Parking Anytime’ zone ordinance for the western curb of Hansen Avenue.
