SUBJECT: Stipend for Superior Court Judges’ Secretaries

INITIATED BY: Superior Court Judges

Recommendation: Approval is requested authorizing a monthly stipend of $200 (to include gross pay plus applicable taxes) for each Secretary to the Superior Court Judges funded by the Chattahoochee Judicial Circuit Office of Dispute Resolution (ODR) for FY18 only.

Background: The secretaries of the Superior Court judges provide administrative assistance to the ODR. The ODR Board voted on Wednesday, June 21, 2017 to provide a stipend to each secretary to compensate each of them for the added duties.

Analysis: The stipend of $200 per month, which includes any applicable taxes paid by the city, will be covered by the $200 stipend. The gross amount to be paid to each secretary is $185.78 plus FICA of $14.22 for a total of $200 each. The ODR will reimburse the city each month by the 25th to cover the payment to be made on the last day of the month.

Financial Considerations: There will be no cost to the city for this stipend. There is no commitment by the city to continue this stipend after FY18.

Legal Considerations: The City Attorney approves this resolution.

Recommendations/Actions: Approve a resolution authorizing a monthly stipend of $200 (to include gross pay plus applicable taxes) for each Secretary to the Superior Court Judges funded by the Chattahoochee Judicial Circuit Office of Dispute Resolution (ODR) for FY18 only.

A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING A MONTHLY STIPEND OF $200, TO INCLUDE APPLICABLE TAXES PAID BY THE CITY, TO EACH OF THE 7 SECRETARIES TO THE SUPERIOR COURT JUDGES. FUNDING TO BE PROVIDED BY THE CHATTAHOOCHEE JUDICIAL CIRCUIT OFFICE OF DISPUTE RESOLUTION (ODR) FOR FY18 ONLY.

WHEREAS, the Superior Court Judges’ secretaries provide administrative assistance to the ODR; and,

WHEREAS, the ODR Board approved on June 21, 2017 a monthly stipend to each secretary in the amount of $200 to include any applicable taxes; and

WHEREAS, the ODR will reimburse the city by the 25th of each month to cover the payment to be made to each secretary on the last day of each month in FY18;

WHEREAS, this stipend will be at no cost to the city and the city will not be obligated to continue the stipend beyond FY18.

NOW, THEREFORE, THE COUNCIL OF COLUMBUS, GEORGIA HEREBY RESOLVES:

The City Manager’s staff (Human Resources Director and Finance Director) is hereby authorized to pay a monthly stipend to each secretary in the amount of $185.78 plus FICA of $14.22.
