Agenda Report # 80

TO: Mayor and Councilors

SUBJECT: Trail System Name and Brand Designation

INITIATED BY: City Manager’s Office

Recommendation: Approval is requested to adopt the name and brand for the trail system as Dragonfly Trails, Columbus GA.

Background: The Friends of the Riverlink represented by the Community Foundation, Inc. made a presentation to council on January 10, 2017 to submit a proposal to name and brand the trail system in Columbus, GA. A Facebook contest was issued to seek names that would indelibly brand the trail system.

Analysis: The submissions were evaluated by the Friends of Riverlink and the finalize was presented to council. The Dragonfly Trails was selected based on the following:
All of the trails will connect to or lead to the Chattahoochee River
Dragonflies are indicator species for clean water
Dragonflies flourish where clean water is available
Dragonfly has the level of memorability that is needed to attach local residents and visitors far and wide to our Dragonfly Trails
The existing segments of the trail system will maintain their existing names of Riverwalk, Fall Line Trace, and Follow Me Trail and will be a part of the Dragonfly Trails.

Financial Considerations: There is no direct fiscal impact.
