SUBJECT: Copper Theft Task Force

INITIATED BY: Columbus Office of Crime Prevention

Recommendation: Approval is requested to extend the current contract with Columbus Police Department to award funding for Crime Prevention initiatives through June 30, 2014.

Background: Columbus Office of Crime Prevention has agreed to recommend the balance of funding for the Columbus Police Department effort to provide equipment for front line officers to help prevent copper theft in the Muscogee County area.

Analysis: Funds will be used to pay for equipment for front line officers to help prevent copper theft in Muscogee County area. A plan is also in place to educate community of techniques that can be used to reduce their chances of being a victim.

Financial Considerations: These funds are appropriated from the Other Local Option Sales Tax, Crime Prevention Program and do not require a match.

Recommendations/ Actions: Approve a resolution authorizing the Mayor and City Manager to extend the existing contract with Columbus Police Department through June 30, 2014 to provide equipment for front line officers to help prevent copper theft in the Muscogee County area.

A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING AN EXTENSION OF THE CONTRACT WITH COLUMBUS POLICE DEPARTMENT FOR $10,042.46 FOR THE PURPOSE OF FUNDING THE INITIATIVES OF COLUMBUS POLICE DEPARTMENT.

WHEREAS, Columbus Police Department has a partnership with the Copper Theft Task Force to impact the community in preventing copper theft; and,

WHEREAS, the Columbus Office of Crime Prevention has authorized funding under the Crime Prevention Program for this project in the amount of $10,042.46 to Columbus Police Department.

NOW, THEREFORE, THE COUNCIL OF COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, HEREBY RESOLVES AS FOLLOWS:

That the Mayor and City Manager are hereby authorized to extend the current contract through the Columbus Office of Crime Prevention with Columbus Police Department through June 30, 2014 for the balance of funding the Copper Theft Project. Funds were budgeted in the FY13 budget and will be carried over to the FY14 Budget: Other Local Option Sales Tax, Crime Prevention Program.
